Exterior pressure washing service

DECKING & TIMBER

Careful cleaning for decking & timber.

Timber and composite decking need a considered method. Learn about gentle cleaning, existing coatings, board condition and realistic results.

Decking Detail

A FRESHER FINISH

A gentler touch for outdoor timber.

Timber and composite decking may look robust but aggressive pressure can roughen wood fibres, damage coatings and force water into vulnerable areas. A suitable cleaning process often calls for gentler methods.

We look at the material, surface coatings, visible deterioration and manufacturer guidance before deciding whether cleaning is appropriate. Not every decking surface is suitable for pressure washing.

WHAT WE CAN ASSESS

Common areas and surfaces.

Suitable work, subject to inspection

  • Timber decking where condition allows
  • Suitable composite decking in line with manufacturer guidance
  • Associated hard surfaces where appropriate

Things worth knowing

  • High pressure may damage timber and is not our default recommendation.
  • Cleaning is not the same as repairing, sanding, staining or sealing.
  • Loose, rotten or structurally unsound decking needs attention before cleaning.

BEFORE WE QUOTE

A useful quote starts with a few details.

Tell us approximately how large the area is, what it is made of, how it is accessed and whether there are stains, loose joints or existing coatings. Photographs can be arranged separately if needed.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about this service.

Can you use a pressure washer on decking?

Sometimes at carefully controlled pressure, but many surfaces are better cleaned by a gentler method.

Will decking look new again?

Ageing, UV changes and worn finishes cannot be reversed by cleaning alone.

Do you stain or seal decking?

These are separate treatments and should only be treated as available if agreed in your quotation.

TIMBER & COMPOSITE CARE

Decking needs a gentler plan than stone or concrete

Timber decking is vulnerable to raised grain, splintering and water driven into damaged boards. Composite decking has its own manufacturer-specific cleaning requirements. Neither should automatically receive the same pressure setting used for hard paving.

Natural timber boards

Timber species, existing treatments and board age all influence the approach. A gentle, controlled clean may be suitable, but high-pressure jets can damage fibres, strip soft areas and leave a patchy finish. Soundness of the boards comes first.

Composite decking

Composite products vary widely by manufacturer. Surface coatings, capped boards and textured finishes may react differently to heat, chemicals and nozzles. The product guidance should be checked wherever available.

Steps, handrails and fixings

Decking steps and edges often carry a greater risk of wear. Loose boards, protruding fixings or failing handrails are repair matters and should be identified before cleaning rather than concealed by the finished appearance.

PREPARATION & AFTERCARE

Cleaning versus restoration: know the difference

A clean can lift general grime and biological build-up, but it cannot reverse rotten timber, warped boards, deep splits or fading caused by sunlight. Some marks are part of the weathering of the material.

Please tell us whether the deck has been oiled, painted or stained, how long the finish has been in place, and whether any boards feel soft or unstable underfoot. Clear photographs help identify whether a cautious inspection is appropriate.

Re-oiling, staining or surface repairs are separate activities. The deck must be in a suitable condition and dry enough for any subsequent finish, in line with the manufacturer’s directions.

SERVICE QUESTIONS

Two more things worth knowing

Will jet washing make decking look new?

Not necessarily. Ageing, sun damage and old treatments can remain visible even when surface dirt is removed.

Is a high-pressure lance safe on composite boards?

It depends on the manufacturer and condition. Some products specifically restrict pressure or nozzle types; those instructions take priority.
